This is not a Photoshop art. It is an actual plane bulit by the NASA, and yes it is flying.

Your eyes are not deceiving you: The wing of this plane is oblique, turned 60-degrees across its fuselage. It’s name is the AD-1 and it’s the weirdest plane ever created by NASA. But why did they make it this way?

The AD-1 Oblique Wing Research Aircraft was designed and made at NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center—located in Edwards, California, in the western Mojave Desert—in the mid-1970s. Engineers were curious about the aerodynamic characteristics of such a plane, as well as the control laws required to govern it. Their objective? Better fuel economy: Wind tunnels at NASA Ames showed that an oblique wing design will use half the fuel at supersonic speeds, thanks to superior aerodynamic qualities.

A piece of ice four times the size of Manhattan island has broken away from an ice shelf in Greenland, according to scientists in the U.S.

The 260 square-kilometer (100 square miles) ice island separated from the Petermann Glacier in northern Greenland early on Thursday, researchers based at the University of Delaware said.

The ice island, which is about half the height of the Empire State Building, is the biggest piece of ice to break away from the Arctic icecap since 1962 and amounts to a quarter of the Petermann 70-kilometer floating ice shelf, according to research leader Andreas Muenchow.

“The freshwater stored in this ice island could keep the Delaware or Hudson rivers flowing for more than two years. It could also keep all U.S. public tap water flowing for 120 days,” Muenchow said.

Muenchow’s team is studying ice in the Nares Strait separating Greenland from Canada, about 1,000 kilometers south of the North Pole.

A powerful tornado has been caught on camera moving through the US state of Minnesota and destroying a house on its way. The twister touched down in Wilkin County, near the North Dakota state border. The footage, captured by a storm chaser ( http://www.youtube.com/user/SevereStu… ) shows the tornado crossing a road, then hitting a farmhouse and scattering debris. It could not be immediately verified if there were people inside the house. No injuries have been reported.

More than 1.6 billion people in the world have little or no access to electricity and most have no way of accessing modern electrical technology, such as like electric lighting, mobile phones or televisions.

But scientists at an Israeli university say they have made a remarkable discovery in relation to the potato which may bring electricity to millions of the world’s poor.

Police in southern Russia will launch a probe into an initiative by local entrepreneurs who sent a donkey into the sky on a parachute in an advertising stunt. The official spokesman for the local directorate of the Interior Ministry told reporters that the parachuting donkey incident took place last Thursday on an Azov Sea beach in the Temryk District in Krasnodar. “They gave this donkey a parachute ride in order to attract holidaymakers’ attention to this sort of entertainment. The donkey brayed and the children cried, but no one was smart enough to inform the police about the incident,” RIA Novosti news agency quoted the official as saying Monday. The police will launch a probe and if the entrepreneurs are found guilty, they could face criminal persecution under the article on cruel treatment of animals of the Russian Criminal Code, which carries a maximum punishment of two years in prison.
